THE EVOLUTION OF WATCH TECHNOLOGY

Timepieces weren’t always this advanced, however, as modern watches are the result of centuries spent innovating. From their humble origins as pendants to their current status as high-end luxury wrist accessories, these pieces have a fascinating story. POCKET WATCHES

The pocket watch is the first time-telling device that could accurately tell time, a capability that took decades to finally achieve. These accessories became popular in the 17th century, marching right alongside the waistcoat. The first pocket watches were inaccurate by hours, but in 1657, the invention of the balance spring made them much more precise, shortening the inaccuracy from hours to minutes. Finally, they became a necessity for those with a tight schedule. While less ubiquitous than in the old days, many still like to carry around a pocket watch.

WRISTWATCHES

It’s hard to determine the original inventor of the wristwatch. The person who is most often credited with the wristwatch’s invention is Abraham-Louis Breguet. In 1810, the eponymous brand’s founder presented the wondrous timepiece to the Queen of Naples. However, it’s possible that someone strapped a pocket watch to their wrist for ease of use even before this. Regardless, it took some time for wristwatches to become popular. It wasn’t until Britain’s various colonial wars of the late 19th century that these timepieces really took off.

WATERPROOF WATCHES

The first waterproof watch was invented in 1851, and showcased by Pettit & Co. at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nation. One-third of Britain’s population is said to have attended the event, including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Then and in the decades after, waterproof watches primarily relied upon airtight parts to be water resistant. They were called “explorer’s watches.” In 1917, the “submarine watch” was introduced. These timepieces not only had airtight parts, but also a tightly sealed case.

QUARTZ WATCHES

The quartz movement was released in 1964 in correspondence with the Tokyo Summer Olympics. Seiko, a Japanese brand, is responsible for this revolutionary invention. Quartz movement differs greatly from its mechanical predecessor. Battery powered quartz movement is more precise, reliable, and affordable than its peer. Some timepieces are chargeable while others require professional battery replacement. This movement is by far the most common today. However, mechanical pieces are still beloved and admired for their handmade complexity.
